Keeping up with the Joneses

Lauren Jones is a sought-after speaker we had the pleasure of meeting at the last California Staffing Professionals Association (CSP) conference. One of my colleagues used an old-school phrase about "keeping up with the Joneses" to describe the content of her program. I'd heard that saying before but was unsure of the exact meaning.

I learned that "keeping up with the Joneses" typically refers to comparing one's neighbor as a benchmark for social status and acquiring material goods. Metaphorically this can be applied to branding, the Employee Value Proposition, and the need to keep up with the accelerating pace of change in an ever-changing recruitment landscape. The only way to do this is to keep on learning.

Wasn't that why we were at the CSP conference in the first place? It's an opportunity to learn from each other, share experiences, and stay ahead of the technology curve. Nobody can afford to get left behind.

We were fortunate to host another CSP speaker, David Haley of Haley Marketing, at our Smart Leadership webinar on August 2, when we looked at Modern Strategies to Attract Talent, Reduce No-Shows, and Improve Fill Rates. The program also stressed the need to change strategies to adapt and thrive in the harsh new realities of today's job market. Indeed, this could start a Golden Age of opportunity in the staffing industry.

My last blog post examined the importance of training and how onboarding, ongoing training, upskilling, and Learning Management Systems have gone through many variations with new technologies. With Millennials now taking the mantle of the largest generational workforce, employers must not only embrace these new training tools and methodologies, but it's also vital to use learning as an opportunity to forge human connections and support team building.
